The company presented a roadmap for readiness for mass production of solid-state batteries with the highest energy density in the industry.

South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI aims to achieve an energy density of 900 Wh/L in its solid-state batteries and plans to begin mass production in 2027.

This is the company's first concrete statement about its readiness for mass production. Although Samsung SDI began pilot production of solid-state cells a year ago, a mass production schedule has not yet been announced.

The statement only mentions volumetric energy density and does not specify energy density based on weight. Higher energy densities can lead to longer ranges or smaller, cheaper batteries for the same range. Solid-state batteries are safer because they do not contain flammable liquid electrolytes.

Samsung SDI plans to use proprietary technologies to achieve the highest energy density in its solid-state batteries. In addition, Samsung SDI will be showcasing other battery technologies at InterBattery 2024, including fast charging and ultra-long-life batteries, although these technologies are not expected to be ready for production until 2026 and 2029, respectively.

Analysis:

Samsung SDI, South Korea's leading battery maker, has announced its plan to mass produce solid-state batteries with the highest energy density in the industry. Information about this plan comes at a time when the global market is actively seeking more efficient and safer alternatives to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Prediction:

If Samsung SDI can fulfill its plans and begin mass production of solid-state batteries with an energy density of 900W/L in 2027, it could lead to a significant shift in the electric vehicle and energy industry. High energy density could increase the range of electric vehicles or make batteries more compact and cheaper. Safety of solid-state batteries will also be a key advantage, especially in the context of possible reduced risk of fire and explosion.

Report:

Samsung SDI has unveiled its roadmap for readiness for mass production of solid-state batteries with the highest energy density in the industry. The company plans to achieve an energy density of 900 W/L and begin mass production in 2027. However, no timetable for the start of mass production has been announced at this time. The company also plans to utilize its technology to achieve high energy density. In addition, Samsung SDI will show other battery technologies including fast charging and ultra-long-life batteries at InterBattery 2024, but they are not expected to be mass produced until 2026 and 2029, respectively.

This represents a significant step forward for the electric vehicle and energy industry, and keeping a close eye on developments will be important for investors and stakeholders.
